TH 141 - Introduction to Theatre

The study of theatre as an art form and one of the humanities, its impact on society, and its relationship to other art forms.

Upon completion of this course, the successful student will discover the potential for learning, enjoyment and personal growth in the theatre experience through a knowledge and appreciation of:

  • The importance of theatrical movements, practices, and forms as expressions of social concerns throughout the ages;
  • The relationships of dramatic themes, characters, conflicts and their resolutions to the student’s own life journey;
  • The unique working relationships of theatre practitioners as collaborative artists and artisans; and
  • The significance of the ongoing tradition of theatre as a synthesis of the arts.

Therefore, you will be able to approach a theatrical event both comfortably and knowledgably and experience live performance as a responsive and responsible audience member.

This course meets the All-University Core Curriculum (AUCC) requirements for Arts/Humanities (Category 3B) and is approved under gtPathways in the content area of Arts and Expression (GT-AH1).

Zhanna Gurvich has been creating memorable theatrical experiences for over 30 years. She is a multifaceted arts professional who has designed and developed hundreds of events from funky performance art pieces in Greenwich Village to lavish Broadway musicals to booths at the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas to Hollywood films to school and community fundraisers to elaborately themed birthday parties for her kids.
As an award-winning designer she has developed visual worlds for The Susan Marshall Dance Company at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Ballet Hispanico at the Joyce Theatre, Chautauqua Opera, Dallas Theatre Center, and the Juilliard Theatre. She received an HOLA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Set Design for her work on La Llorona at the Samuel Beckett Theatre.
Zhanna's Broadway credits include: Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Curtains starring David Hyde Pierce, High Fidelity, The Drowsy Chaperone, Sweet Smell of Success starring John Lithgow, White Christmas, Shrek the Musical, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom starring Whoopie Goldberg, and Gypsy starring Bernadette Peters.  On the big screen, she helped design The Replacements, a film starring Keanu Reeves and Gene Hackman and won recognition for her designs of Valerie Says and Stone Mansion, featured in The American Black Film Festival, Urbanworld Film Festival, Hollywood Black Film Festival, and the Showtime Black Filmmaker Showcase.
Zhanna is the General Manager at In Living Colored Productions, a company that strives to produce meaningful, though provoking, multicultural theatre for the community and the educational system. She has served as General Manager and Production Manager at Bas Bleu Theatre and she teaches Arts Management and Theatrical Design classes at CSU.
Zhanna is a member of United Scenic Artists Local 829 and holds a B.F.A. in Studio Art from Clark University, and an M.F.A. in Stage Design from Southern Methodist University.  Visit her website at www.zhannag.com.
